The Sony presentation today focused on both online games and PSP news, and of the two, the PSP unveiling was the more enlightening to the crowd in attendance. SCEA President Kaz Hirai revealed both the official specs for the system and a number of games in development, and offered some interesting bits of info during both halves of the presentation. Though he didn't say that the device shown was the final design, the fact that he came out carrying a prototype model spoke for itself. The device he carried is black, though images released on the press CD also show an off-white model, indicating that the system may come in more than one color variant. In the center is the 16:9 widescreen display, which carries a resolution of 480x272 pixels. The left face has a digital d-pad with the stereo speaker below, with a loop for attaching a strap. Running below the display are volume control buttons, two menu control buttons, and the select and start keys. On the right are the PSP's four face buttons in the familiar diamond configuration. Finally, the top of the system bears two clear trigger buttons. The back of the system is less interesting, with little else to see but the UMD and memory stick slots. More exciting are the insides: the amount of RAM, for one thing, is higher than previous estimates, clocking in at 32MB of regular RAM and 4MB of EDRAM. Already known were the USB2.0 controller ports, and in addition to those, it'll have built-in ports for headphones, microphone, 5V DC out, and the aforementioned memory stick. Wireless connectivity will follow the 802.11b standard, which should easily allow the PSP to communicate with other systems or wireless Internet points. The PSP contains a lithium-ion 1,800mAh battery inside, though exactly what good this will do is a point of some contention. Hirai compared the system's battery life to that of existing portable music players, game systems, and DVD players, but things got a little dodgier after that: the number cited for the DVD player was 2 hours, while the number cited for portable game machines was 10 hours. Our guess is that the way to read this is that anything read off static media like memory sticks will be close to the 10 hours, while spinning the proprietary UMD discs will bring the capacity down to about 2 hours. However, we'd be happy to be proven wrong. Not in the PSP yet, but planned peripherals for the system include headphones with remote controller, a remote microphone, an external battery, a case so you don't get that big, beautiful, exposed screen scratched) and strap. There'll also be a USB camera, a GPS device, and a keypad designed specifically for the system to give it a few productivity functions. Not that anyone cares about them, we want the games. Sony didn't release an official list of games in the works, but they did show two- to three-second clips of works in progress. Among the games we spotted: Death Jr., Hot Shots Golf, Frogger, an unidentified beachball game, a Tales game from Namco, Ape Escape, Armored Core, Syphon Filter, Spider-Man, MediEvil, Dynasty Warriors, Gran Turismo, Ridge Racer, Tony Hawk, Darkstalkers, Wild Arms, and Metal Gear Solid. We have no idea how many of these games (if any) will be playable on the floor, but look for more Metal Gear Solid PSP details from Konami's press conference tonight. A slightly longer presentation from EA's John Mattrick followed, where he showed footage from the four games EA currently has planned for PSP launch. (Though he mentioned that over 100 team members were working on PSP titles, and said that EA would launch "a minimum" of 4 games with the system, so there could be more.) None of the games were on final hardware and displayed varying levels of obvious fakery, but it's a solid lineup: NBA Street, NFL Street, Tiger Woods PGA Tour, and Need for Speed Underground. We hope to have more details on whatever PSP games are around the show floor, whether in playable or video form, so keep reading.

Married to the money, fuck the world, that's adultery

E3 2004: PSP Games Shown In Action Quick impressions from the PSP demo reel. May 11, 2004 - PSP Games Unveiled Quick impressions from the PSP demo reel. The news has already hit the wire via a Sony press release sent out just as the show wrapped up, below is a confirmed list of games actually shown at the PSP unveiling at today's Sony Computer Entertainment conference this morning, as well as quick impressions from our tired minds (*Note -- look for separate impressions of the four PSP titles unveiled by EA). Look for video of all these games in just a short while today. * Hot Shots: The PSP version aped the PlayStation 2 edition down to the pixel in some cases. The high-res ball, the expansive 3D courses and the superdeformed Japanese characters (which we're sure to lose in the US release ... sob) all made for good news to golfers. * Death Jr.: Super-sharp and even more impressive than the GDC demo, the game looks to have progressed. In the quick blip of motion, the realtime lighting really stood out as shadows played across monster bodies and wals. The 'shooter-not-platformer' concept also came across a little better in the quick-moving clip * Frogger: Konami dazzled with its MGS demo, so we'll just gloss over this conversion of the console version of Frogger. Not that Frogger is the type of game would have caught our eye even if it had been dazzling. * Pool Game/Demo We couldn't tell if this was meant to be a realtime demo or an actual game, although it looked to be that there was a playable goal to the demo, so we'll guess game. Incredibly rendered 3D balls, shining and shadowing each other, are batted around inside a small box. * Ape Escape: When estimates put the power of the PSP somewhere the PS2 and the PS one, all kinds of ideas as far as how deep Sony would dip into its archives were raised. This game demo falls into the PS one category -- although elements were rendered in higher detail and with an apparent cel shading effect, this looked to be an exact remake of the first PlayStation game. * Medievil: Another remake, this edition of Studio Cambridge's goofy horror platformer struck us as remake material, like Ape Escape. That's not a bad thing, but Ghosthunter left us longing for the classic series, and the PSP would have been a good place for a third chapter. * F1: They always show an F1 game as part of a visual demo, and we can never tell why -- they all look the same, and they almost all look nice (that low-to-the-road view and short car model have made for pretty pics since the PlayStation.) This is assumed to be the next iteration from SCE Europe's franchise. * ATV Off-Road Fury: After seeing ATV Off-Road Fury on PS2, this was a welcome compliment. We're going to assume that it's being developed by Climax (who had earlier announced plans for PSP development), and though which edition of the series this was to be was not displayed at the show, we'll guess that ATV3 and thus one of the few dual-system games planned for PS2 * Syphon Filter: Some thought Gabe and crew would be retired with Syphon Filter: Omega Strain (releasing next week), but not many really believe that the franchise would drop out as well. It hasn't, and its next immediate stop is the PlayStation Portable system. Headshots in dark environments were the highlight of the clip. * Spider-Man: It wasn't in the same league as the upcoming console edition -- character models and environment details were not as well rendered as the PS2 game (or the previous PS2 edition, if we have to make a call from memory,) and the gameplay didn't seem to indicate the go-anywhere GTA gameplay of Spider-Man 2 (it would have featured prominently in the clip if it had.) But trust your Spidey Senses -- this game still boasted the incredible fighting mechanics and web-slinging powers of the series, and the short clip looked quite fun all the same. * Wipeout: Another in-betweener, this edition of the Wipeout franchise boasted a lot of boost in its liquid framerate and sense of speed. In the blur of the games show, we kind of lost track of this one, but upon further inspection, the stage modeling looks to easily be on par with Wipeout Fusion. * Gran Turismo: One of two racing demos on this set of trailers, this demo was pretty much rivaled only by the other racing demo (and Dynasty Warriors, which looked hot as can be.) Several racetracks struck us as smacking straight out of GT4, with a gorgeous fly-by that has to be seen to be believed, and car models were all quite nice. Quite nice. * Hockey Demo: We'll assume that this is the next (not this year's model, but two years from now from Blue42) edition of 989's hockey game series. Unfortunately, in keeping with the unfortunate history of 989 Sports, this was one of the less impressive clips on the system -- we'll just say that it looked super early (which we're sure it was) and didn't have much worth talking about in the player detail.
jagvillocksåhaenblog.com
* Soccer Demo: Also assumed to be part of the 989 franchise offerings, this game looked much more the part -- amazing player details and fan-filled stadiums popped right off of the screen. * Twisted Metal: It's about time that we've seen a new entry in the twisted Twisted franchise, and this one, while early, promises to deliver. An apparent remake of older games in the franchise, the game boasted sweet TM:B effects and also showcased a few returning characters. * Tony Hawk's Pro Skater: This one was good news, but also something of an anomaly -- the gameplay, in the blip-second clip, looked oddly angled from what we're used to in the series. It's full 3D, with character models and stages straight out of the PS2 editions, but it could well be that Neversoft is playing with angles in the game to make more impact and availability for skate lines. Or, more likely, our tired state sent our eyesight spinning for a second. * Ridge Racer: If anything can put the "Ridged Racer" jests of the early PS2 days to rest, we'd like to hope that this could be one of the games to shut people up. Between this and Gran Turismo, the handheld has racers covered -- GT4 was far superior and more obviously complete, but there was some sharp detail in the car models plus a few nice effects. Oh, and Reiko showed up. Sweet, sweet Reiko. * Breath of Fire: We're only taking a wild stab at this, but this RPG fell in with other Capcom demos and featured character and enemy designs quite similar to original editions of the RPG series. * Darkstalkers: If anything could bring a smile to the lips of hardcore gamers, images of at least three (if not four ... it was tough to tell if the other RPG pic was not also Breath of Fire) games in glorious 2D. We're not entirely sure where this pulls out of the franchise (likely the Dreamcast combo edition), but no Street Fighter characters were shown, so we'll guess that this is all Darkstalkers. Not that we're complaining -- the PSP looks to take 2D and spin it wild, so we're quite happy (and hopeful ... hear us, SCEA) for the prospects of 2D on the handheld. * Bust A Move: Not Bust-A-Groove, unfortunately (we're tired of dancing at home -- it's time to take our boogie on the road!), this edition of the Taito puzzler was a bit strange -- the game was never shown with just one 'screen' across, and always upside down or in a spinning transition. Our guess: this could be a two-player iteration of the game where players share opposite sides of the handheld. * Armored Core Another great demo of detail, this edition of From Soft's mech battler was stunning and true to the PS2 editions of late. Fast-action with a bliustering framerate and with mechs detailed to the nuts and bolts, we're just now imagining the networked possibilities of this game... * Dynasty Warriors: One of the games to really send home the detailing power of the PSP, Dynasty Warriors for PSP boasted character models that, if our bloodshot eyes can be trusted, may have bested the PS2 edition. If not, they certainly were detailed enough to make an immense impression on the 4" screen. We were not able to see if this powerful pocket system would be able to deal better with the fog distance than its big brother, but this series has always been a blast, and a handheld version means all the more button-mashing goodness. * Untitled FPS: We have no idea what this game was, but if there was a killer app in the PSP trailer besides Gran Turismo and a new Metal Gear, this could be it. No title was given, but the gorgeous character models on the golden feminine hero, as well as the effects shot out when a ship landed and the ragdoll physics of dying enemies tossed by explosions, this handheld game easily rivaled Nintendo's Gamecube wonder, Metroid Prime (actually, it even featured the ability to transform into a ball ... we smell a conspiracy, but so far, we still like the smell of things.)

Officially unveiled at Sony's E3 press conference yesterday, the PSP is the company's upcoming handheld system. You've certainly read about the specs and seen the videos by now, but now we've actually laid our hands on the new device. Read on for more details. It's worth saying up front that there aren't any actual playable PSP games on display at E3. Most of the kiosks in Sony's roped-off area are running non-interactive demos. The lone exceptions are Metal Gear Acid and Tales of Eternia from Konami and Namco, respectively. But even these demos don't really qualify as gameplay, as MG Acid merely gives you some basic camera control and Tales of Eternia is limited to walking or running your character through town and talking to villagers. Interesting to note is that the device does, in fact, have an analog pad on it. The small disc just below the D pad, once thought to be a speaker, is the PSP's analog pad. It slides around fairly smoothly and, unlike the analog pads on the PS2, can't be pushed in for a button press. The D pad and the system's six main buttons--four on the face and two on the shoulders--are digital buttons. There are also a collection of system control buttons just below the screen, giving you volume control. There is also a "home" button here, leading one to believe that the PSP may have some sort of front-end outside of a game's main menu. The system's screen is very bright and very clear, making it a nice way to show off the demos currently on display. The system is wide, but not very much wider than, say, the original Game Boy Advance. Though no specifics have been decided in regards to system colors, several different PSP units are on display, including a white unit, some units with Ratchet & Clank decals, and so on. Examples of UMD discs are also on display. The tops of the discs are every bit as colorful as current PlayStaion 2 discs, and the casing that houses the discs looks like it will guard the game discs against scratching. Though Sony wasn't able to demo the disc insertion process for us, it sounds like the back of the unit will open up to reveal a disc slot. A slider on the top of the system, marked "open," will open up the disc slot. Examples of disc packaging were also on display, though nothing has been finalized at this time. Though interactive contact with the PSP is currently pretty limited, the system has a pretty good feel to it. Expect more on PSP software from E3.

Sony representatives have informed GameSpot that September's Tokyo Game Show will be the place to play games on Sony's new portable system, the PSP. Here at E3 several game demos are running on noninterative loops, though Sony has yet to formally announce most of the games shown. Representatives are quick to point out that none of the software on display here at E3 has been formally announced, and that some of the products shown may serve better as tech demos than actual games. We'll have more on Sony's PSP live from the show floor at E3, which is currently underway.

Exakt.
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Sony Corp. does not expect to make money on its new PlayStation Portable handheld games console at launch, due to the price of components and initial development costs, the head of Sony's U.S. games unit said Wednesday. In an interview on the sidelines of the games industry trade show E3 in Los Angeles, Sony Computer Entertainment of America Chief Executive Kaz Hirai also said the company would need to have a minimum of six to 10 games available at the PSP's launch, both from its own studios and from third-party publishers. But at the same time, Hirai said, it would not need that many games at launch if it could identify one or two breakout hits, "killer apps" that would drive consumers to buy the hardware just to play those games. "It could be as little as six titles, maybe with one or two great killer (applications)," Hirai said. Sony plans to launch the PSP, its most significant new game hardware in four years, later this year in Japan and in early 2005 in North America and Europe. It has not set a price for the unit, which will also play music and movies, though most in the industry expect a price in the range of $199 to $299. "So if you're saying 'Day one, are you going to be profitable on the hardware?' then probably not," Hirai said. "Hopefully, this will have a 10-year lifecycle, at which point I'll look back and say 'Yes, definitely profitable."' The PSP will use a new kind of disc designed by Sony called Universal Media Disc (UMD). With three times the capacity of a standard CD, the company is pitching the format to other movie studios and music companies as a new medium for their content. Hirai said Sony would almost certainly have other devices that use the new format besides PSP. "We have very high ambitions for this new format," he said. "I don't think you can establish a format with just one hardware platform." The company has also recently focused on storage for the PS2, releasing a 40-gigabyte hard drive in March, though as yet it has only one function, letting users play "Final Fantasy XI." Hirai said Sony was committed to adding new features for the hard drive, though he declined to commit to a timetable for launching services like a long-planned custom version of the AOL service. He added that he would consider other storage media with less memory than the hard drive, such as high-capacity memory and USB devices.
